CONCLUSION

It may be tempting to view the new politics of the child as a simple matter of enlightened reform and reaction, in which the state acted according to a new ideology and the colonial elite reacted.144 It is true that broader European absolutist trends and Enlightenment philosophies of child rearing inspired many Bourbon social policies, and that the king frequently pushed social reforms too far for colonial elites in Spanish America. However, to recognize that both the king and local elites formulated their own versions of new philosophies and policies of childhood-that the interaction was comprised not of a unilateral imposition of European ideas on the city but of a new politics of ideas on childhood-means that we must refrain from reducing the period to a simple thesis-antithesis dynamic, and from portraying the king as a liberalizing reformer and colonial elites as conservative reactionaries.
